Dr. Nicholas Bedford
Prior to arriving at UNSW, Nick was a staff member of the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory (2017-2018), where he also served as a contractor (2016-2017), National Research Council (NRC) Postdoctoral Associate (2012-2014) and a Dayton Area Graduate Studies Scholar during his PhD (2009-2011). He obtained his PhD in Materials Science from the University of Cincinnati (2011) and his BS in Chemistry and Physics from Central Michigan University (2007).

New paper out in Advanced Materials 🤖🧱💪💂♂️🏋️♂️👩🏭🙌🏆🥳🥳. In this paper, we report on the development of electrocatalyst ⚡️for the selective oxidation of urea 🚽 to non-toxic chemicals. Typically, urea electrooxidate leads to nitrates, which a) cause algae blooms 🍘😵 and b) will naturally metabolize 🧫to nitrates… so why put in energy to do this 🧐🤔🤡? Here, we develop a copper based catalyst that coverts urea to N2 selectively across a range of conditions, with minimal nitrate 😁. The effort was lead by @yuweii77vv and includes collaborations between the CoE CSI 🌊, CU Boulder 🦬, @oakridgelab ⛰️, and @esrf_synchrotron (happy Bastille Day 🥖🎆). In this effort, lead by @zuby57 , defect engineered 👨🔧 layered double hydroxide catalysts where examined for biomass electrooxidation reactions 💚🌿, and emerging area of clean energy research. The catalyst were thoroughly examined using a range of in-situ synchrotron methods, using facilatied at the Aussitron 🇦🇺🐨🦘, the Advanced Photon Source 🇺🇸🐦🔥👽, and for the first time, SPring-8 🌹🇯🇵🗾. Regarding the latter, we owe a huge thank you to our collaborators at the Tokyo Institute of Technology for helping us out at SPring-8 during the lockdowns 🥹. New paper out in Advanced Materials Technologies 🔮🧱📟!! Led by our mates in CAMD 🎥 at UNSW, multi component composites were made via 3D printing 🖨️. Acrylonitrile and polycarbosilane were combined with a photocurable 💡❤️🩹 resin and printed, providing a means to tune local microphase separation. After pyrolysis, a SiOC/carbon material was formed exhibiting the properties of both materials.
